Rotary gives away $22,000 to local Milton & global charities

On May 14, 2012 the Rotary Club of Milton gave away over $22,000 to worthy local and global charities, many focused on children and youth. The following financial awards and donations were made:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Milton – BBBS executive director Barbara Ferrone received money raised in March 2012 from the Rotary Club of Milton's annual spring dance. BBBS will use the money to expand an after-school homework program in Milton schools.
Community Living North Halton – CLNH executive director Greg Edmiston received money towards the services CLNH provides to developmentally disabled individuals in Milton.
Milton Youth Centre - The Deck – Deck Director Oliver Clarke received money towards the cost of a new outdoor basketball net at The Deck's youth centre in Milton, providing a safe, healthy refuge for Milton's youth.
The Lighthouse Program in Oakville, which is a facility that helps grieving children and youth through various programs, serving the greater Halton area.
Milton High School Students for Bursaries - Bishop Reding – 2 awards; EC Drury – 2 (Mike Ledwith Rotary Humanity Award); Milton District – 2 (Osler Music Award); EC Drury School for the Deaf – 1 award; Gary Allan High School – 1
Milton High School Students for Scholarships - 3 recipients

On May 14, 2012 the Rotary Club of Milton gave away over $22,000 to worthy local and global charities, many focused on children and youth. The following financial awards and donations were made:

Milton High School Students for Scholarships - 3 recipients
Shelterbox Canada, a Rotary-affiliated international disaster relief program that provides boxes that contain tents, pots and pans, water purification, etc. received money. Depots are strategically located around the world to respond to disasters immediately and distribute these boxes. Recent deployments include Haiti (earthquake) and Japan (earthquake & tsunami).

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program– supported by the Rotary Club of Milton – attending the Awards Night were Sara Noakes and Melissa Hendricken, who were this year's RYLA recipients.
Rotary International Youth Exchange – This year the Rotary Club of Milton is financially supporting and facilitating an outbound Halton high school student to go to Japan for one full year.
The Milton Grade 3 Dictionary Program – Milton Rotarians distributed a dictionary to every single public elementary school Grade 3 student in Milton and next year plans an expansion into Catholic schools as well.

International Distaster Relief (Horn of Africa Famine) – A portion of this money was raised at Milton Rotary's Halloween Dance.
Global Eradication of Polio (Rotary's Polio Plus Program)
The Rotary Foundation - The Foundation is a not-for-profit foundation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve the goals of peace and understanding by supporting humanitarian projects around the world.
